Motti Wolkenbruch, a young Orthodox Jew, finds himself at a crossroads: His beloved mother desperately wants him to get married and presents him with one marriage candidate after another. Unfortunately, Motti doesn't hit it off with any of them – they all just look too much like his mother. The situation gets even more complicated when Motti secretly falls in love with the non-Jewish girl Laura, a so-called Shiksa.
Michael Steiner («Sennentuntschi») hat Thomas Meyers Entwicklungsroman überraschend zurückhaltend adaptiert. Er fängt das jüdische Zürich liebevoll ein, und Joel Basman schauen wir bei der Emanzipation gerne zu.
Andreas ScheinerVoilà un film suisse qui fait plaisir à voir. Evidemment, on y joue de mille caricatures qui ne manquent pas néanmoins de refléter une part importante de réalité. Outre la tenue vestimentaire, il faut encore ajouter que le père de Motti gère une assurance privée, et que sa mère est plus qu’autoritaire: elle est affectueusement tyrannique. Avec ses petites lunettes, sa barbe rousse et sa discrétion excessive, Motti a tout du jeune Yiddish. Cela n’empêche pas la comédie d’être réussie.
